Infill handrails are required on a compliant ramp or step system. The product prevents users from climbing or falling through gaps.

Compliant systems are often specified for schools and public buildings / spaces.

Standard handrail is often specified for residential  properties and in some public / modular applications.

Ramp Handrail Regulations

  • They must be slip-resistant and have a warm-to-touch finish.
  • Must be looped or be closed. This is stated to prevent clothes from catching.
  • For residential buildings, infill rail must be included when the ramp height exceeds 600mm.
  • For commercial buildings, infill rail must be included when the ramp height exceeds 380mm.
  • They must be between 900-1000mm high.
  • For public buildings, the building regulations states that the minimum gaurd rail height for a level platform is 1100mm (Doc K. Page 24. Diagram 3.1. / BS8300-1. Page 42).

Galvanised Handrails

All our ramp handrails are galvanised. This is a process where a protective coating of zinc is applied to prevent rusting.

Powder coating is next applied to create a durable finish that is tougher than conventional paint.

Warm To Touch Handrails

Document M & K of the Building Regulations does specify that handrails should not ‘become excessively cold or hot to touch.

The handrail product used on our modular ramps and steps achieves this ‘warm to touch’ finish, with a nylon coating of low thermal conductivity, so that body heat is not conducted away from the hand.

The process allows the system to become robust enough to deal with our ever-changing British weather conditions.

Wooden Ramp Handrails VS Steel

Unlike wood, steel ramp handrail are made from a fire-resistant material that will not typically burn and melt at temperatures encountered in building fires.

Over time, wood will rot and experience moss growth from wet weather exposure.
