What Is An Expanded Metal Ramp?

Published on Wednesday 9th March 2022

An expanded metal ramp has a perforated mesh surface that is often diamond-shaped to allow water to drain through rather than puddle, freeze, or become slippery. The surface is achieved by cutting and stretching sheet metal until it forms the shape required. The same technique is used within our Rapid Ramp manufacturing process.

Document K of the Building Regulations states that the ramp surface should be slip-resistant, a quality that perforated metal mesh can achieve with the right design and manufacturing.

The Rapid Ramp Steel System

Our ramp system has a self-draining mesh platform made from robust steel that can cope with greater weight limits without bending or deforming.

The platform also has a loading capacity of 1,000kgs and can safely support high volumes of public footfall, hospital beds, moving trollies, heavy medical equipment, wheelchairs, prams, and mobility scooters.

All ramp components, including handrails and platforms, have been zinc coated and hot-dip galvanized in accordance with BS EN ISO 14713-2:2020, creating a non-conductive, slip-resistant and scratch resistant surface.

Plus, all components (excluding the platforms and ramp legs) are powder-coated to create a durable finish that is tougher than conventional paint.

Its design enables it to withstand exposure from extreme weather conditions, all without affecting its performance as an external access system.

Ramp surface options:

The perforated mesh is standard on our Rapid Ramp System. Two other ramp surfaces are available too:

Rubber Crumb Surface - This is a soft, slip-resistant surface that reduces the impact of falls. The product is made from the same materials used in soft play areas and is ideal for nurseries, schools, and public facilities.

GRP Surface - A slip-resistant and non-corrosive surface ideal for areas with high footfall, such as schools and public spaces. The product comes in dark grey as standard.

Question: Do you need a fully compliant ramp?

If your ramp must comply to Part K and M of the Building Regulations and/or DDA requirements, then you will need a fully compliant ramp >>Learn More<<.
