While the hospital underwent an internal reconfiguration, a rear doorway needed to function as a temporary fire exit suitable for hospital beds.

The added challenge was that the road outside this doorway served as the only access route to an area at the back designated for temporary modular buildings. However, the road wasn’t wide enough to accommodate larger vehicles, so the lorries carrying the building modules had to mount the pavement to reach the area.

The contractor originally planned to construct a concrete ramp; however, this option would have obstructed crucial vehicle access and proved expensive and time-consuming to dismantle. Instead, our modular ramp system was selected as a more practical and efficient solution, offering the flexibility, rapid installation, and easy removal that the project demanded.

A full site assessment was completed using RapidScan technology to record all visible features, including the walls, entrance, changing levels, and surrounding obstacles.

Our design team then overlaid a 3D ramp model onto the scan, carefully planning around any potential obstructions.

A comprehensive 2D plan and 3D model, along with a detailed quotation, were then emailed to the project contractor.

The design was approved by Building Control prior to installation.

We delivered a system that ensured a safe exit route suitable for patients on hospital beds while maintaining roadway access when required — one of the many advantages of a demountable ramp system.

A wall-mounted handrail along the brick wall provided extra support, while the ramp included a handrail on the open side, offering stability and safety for all users.

With is steel construction, our ramp provided significantly greater protection and durability than a timber alternative could have, as timber is highly flammable, burns quickly, and poses increased risks in the event of a fire.

Yellow was chosen because its bright, high-contrast colour is easier for visually impaired users to detect, helping them identify the system’s nose and any changes in level.
