Rochdale Infirmary
Healthcare
Rochdale, Greater Manchester
REQUIREMENT:
The hospital underwent an internal reconfiguration, which required the doorway to function as a short-term fire egress suitable for hospital beds.
The roadway provides the only access route to the area designated for the temporary modular buildings; however, it is not wide enough for a lorry carrying the building modules to pass without mounting the pavement.
The original design proposed a concrete ramp, but this would have obstructed essential vehicle access and would have been costly and time-consuming to remove once no longer needed. As a result, a modular steel ramp system was selected as a more practical alternative.
Our modular ramp could easily accommodate the varying ground levels thanks to its telescopic legs, and it remains ideal for temporary projects such as this, where flexibility, ease of installation, and straightforward future removal are key considerations.
DESIGN PHASE:
A full site assessment was carried out using RapidScan technology to capture all visible features, including the walls, entrance, thresholds, ground levels, and surrounding obstacles.
Our design team then overlaid a 3D model of the ramp onto the scan, carefully planning around any potential obstructions.
Comprehensive 2D plans and 3D models, along with a detailed quotation, were then submitted to the project contractor for approval ahead of installation.
These drawings proved invaluable during consultations with the hospital’s key decision-makers.
END RESULT:
We delivered a fully demountable modular ramp system, offering the perfect balance of functionality and convenience.
The design was approved by Building Control prior to installation, ensuring safe bed egress while keeping the roadway accessible whenever required — one of the many advantages of the Rapid Ramp system.
A wall-mounted handrail along the brick wall provides an additional layer of support for individual’s use, while the ramp itself includes a handrail on the open side, ensuring stability and safety for all users.
Constructed from fire-resistant steel, the ramp offers far greater protection and durability than a timber alternative, which is highly flammable and much more dangerous in the event of a fire, as it burns quickly.
FEATURES INCLUDED:
- Infill Handrail – Prevents users from climbing or falling through gaps.
- Yellow Tread – A safety feature that helps those with impaired vision identify the nose of the system and any changes in level. The bright yellow colour provides strong contrast, making edges easier to detect.
- Looped Trombone Ends – Designed to prevent clothing from snagging on the ends of the handrail.
- Slip-Resistant Mesh Platform – A multi-directional walkway made from self-draining, galvanised steel mesh.
- Continuous Handrail – Ensures users always have a secure support to hold onto.
- 1100mm High Rail – Handrails designed to attach to any level section.
- Standard Colour: Black – Ramps are finished with a durable, powder-coated black surface that outperforms standard paint.
- Adjustable Telescopic Legs – Easily adapted to suit various threshold heights.
- Yellow GRP (Glass Reinforced Plastic) – A non-corrosive, slip-resistant material ideal for high-footfall public areas such as schools, hospitals, train stations and airports. Yellow was chosen because its bright, high-contrast colour is easier for visually impaired users to detect, helping them identify the system’s nose and any changes in level.
- Modular Steps - Provides access for able-bodied users and can be a joining addition to a modular ramp installation or an independent unit.
