We were approached to design, supply and install a ramp connecting the ground floor of the decked car park to the upper level.

The contractor requested a choice of surface finishes, including steel, GRP or a combination of both, along with the addition of a lower intermediate handrail in yellow to improve visibility.

It also had to comply with the relevant Network Rail accessibility standards, including minimum requirements for gradient, width, landings, handrails and edge protection.

A RapidScan survey was carried out by our in-house surveyor to capture existing site conditions, including levels, ceiling heights, access routes and potential obstructions. These details were used to identify constraints and ensure the proposed ramp was suitable for the space.

Our design team then produced a site-specific 2D plan and 3D visualisation, showing how the system would integrate with the existing environment.

The completed system was installed by our fitting team in just five working days.

Careful planning around the existing site conditions also allowed the works to be completed efficiently, with minimal disruption to users.

Yellow contrasting details were incorporated along the route to improve visibility and help passengers move confidently between levels.

SYSTEM FEATURES INCLUDED:

• Looped Trombone Ends – Curved end sections reduce the risk of clothing, bags or other items snagging on exposed rail ends.
• Slip-Resistant Mesh Platform – A multi-directional walkway with self-draining steel mesh provides a secure walking surface whilst allowing water and debris to pass through.
• Standard Colour: Black – Powder-coated black finish provides greater durability and weather resistance than traditional paint.
• Adjustable Telescopic Legs – Allow the ramp to accommodate the varying existing ground levels and threshold heights.
• Anti-Climbing Infill Handrail – Continuous infill provides enhanced edge protection and helps prevent users from climbing through or falling through gaps.
• Slip-Resistant Yellow Tread – High-visibility tread highlights key level changes and transition points.
• Solid Underside Hoarding - This skirt is purposefully designed to deter unauthorised access to the underside of the ramp.
• Slip-Resistant GRP Platform – A robust, non-corrosive surface designed for high-traffic public areas. The colour contrast (yellow against grey) improves visibility for people with visual impairments.
• Yellow Lower Intermediate Handrail - Designed for young children and wheelchair users, this handrail is set at a height of 600mm above the system's surface. The yellow handrail was selected to provide a strong visual contrast against the surrounding structure, making the handrail more easily identifiable and supporting safe navigation for users, particularly those with visual impairments. 
• Corduroy Strips – This feature serves as a tactile warning for individuals with visual impairments, indicating the presence of a step approach.

All features combined delivered a robust and practical access solution that integrated seamlessly within the station’s car park, making movement easier for users of all abilities.
