Hathersage Road Car Park
AN INTERNAL RAMP INSTALLED OVER CONCRETE
Healthcare
Manchester
BACKGROUND:
Patients, staff, and visitors for the Oxford Road site of Manchester Royal Infirmary use the linking Hathersage Road Car Park daily.
REQUIREMENT:
Ramped access from the car park level to the hospital’s disabled lift.
SITE SURVEY:
This project benefitted from the RapidScan technology used by our site surveyors.
The machine scanned and plotted the heights and widths of the objects in view, including the concrete flooring, ceiling, pillars, and overhead ring beams.
This information was invaluable for the CAD designer who needed to achieve a minimum of 2m headroom between the beams and the upper ramp section.
With this consideration in mind, our designer created a 3D visual of the ramp on top of the RapidScan model with labels for context.
INSTALLATION:
Our installation team completed the ramp in just two days, ensuring a fast turnaround and minimising disruption on site. In contrast, traditional concrete ramp installations require several days to cure and can be delayed by cold or wet weather, which can significantly extend project timelines.
The ramp was designed with a 1:15 gradient for the lower section and a 1:12 gradient for the upper section, ensuring compliance with accessibility standards while maintaining a 2m headroom clearance beneath the beams.
The system connects seamlessly to a new metal floor platform leading to a lobby and disabled lift. To ensure stability, the ramp's feet were securely bolted to the ground.
FEATURES INCLUDED:
- Looped Trombone Ends – Prevents clothes from snagging at the ends.
- Slip-resistant Mesh Platform - A multi-directional walkway with self-draining steel mesh and a galvanised finish.
- Anti-climbing Infill Handrail - Prevents users from climbing or falling through gaps.
- Continuous Handrail - Provides unbroken support for users to hold onto.
- Bespoke Yellow Colour - Yellow is one of the easiest colours to see because of its ability to reflect light. The handrails are powder coated to create a durable finish that is tougher than conventional paint.
- Adjustable Telescopic Legs - Adaptable to various threshold heights.
- Non-slip Yellow Stair Nosings - Enhances visibility of system edges and level changes for users with impaired vision.
